About the tool

What it is

Base64 turns any data into text made of 64 safe characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). It is not encryption: anyone can decode it back.

When it helps

Use it when data has to pass through a channel that only accepts text: JSON, an HTTP header, an e-mail, or a data URI in CSS and HTML. The URL-safe variant replaces + and / with - and _ and drops the trailing =, so it can go into an address.

How to use it

Choose Encode or Decode and paste your text; the result is computed as you type. Line wrap breaks the output after 76 characters. When decoding you can paste a whole data URI, the tool strips the prefix. Swap moves the output into the input and flips the direction.
